About The Programme

M.Sc. Microbiology course offers specializations to the students in the areas such as agricultural microbiology, industrial microbiology, microbial genetics, food microbiology, microbial physiology & metabolism and clinical microbiology. M.Sc. Microbiology Syllabus trains the students to enable them to harness their theoretical knowledge and practical explorations in the areas of Microbiology.

The project work taken up by the students in the final semester gives them an insight into the research areas of the subject. After completion of M.Sc. Microbiology course, the students can study further to enhance their qualification and may pursue either M. Phil. or Ph.D. in Microbiology.

The library is enriched with good collections of books on the subject; students are given enough time to do reference work in institutions like Central Marine Fisheries research Institute, Kochi, Cochin University of Science and Technology, Kochi, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The faculty members are goal – driven and dedicted to help students achieve these goals . The Microbiology Department was established as a self – financing four semester course in the year 2002.

Scope &Features

  • Upon completing degree in M. Sc. Microbiology, students should have thorough understanding and knowledge of the core concepts in General Microbiology.
  • Microbiology postgraduates will be able to:
  • Describe the role and interaction of microorganisms in the ecosystem and its usefulness as a ‘model system’ to study basic biology, genetics, metabolism and ecology.
  • Identify role of microorganism in disease and in the environment including elemental cycles, biodegradation, etc.
  • Cite examples of the vital role of microorganisms in fermentation, biotechnology, medicine, and other industries important to human well being.
  • Explain the reason for ubiquitous distribution of microorganism in wide range of ecological habitat including extreme environments in nature.
  • Attain laboratory skills in microbiological practices including immunological and molecular microbiological method
