“service can have no meaning unless one takes pleasure in it. When it is done for show or for fear of public opinion, it stunts the man and crushes his spirit. Service which is rendered without joy helps neither the servant nor the served.” (Mahatma Gandhi)
The NSS scheme was launched all across India in over 37 universities in the year 1969 with the intention of imbibing the spirit of national integration and social harmony among students. Aimed at the student community, this scheme aspired to orient the youth of the nation to selfless but meaningful community service while they are still studying in educational institutions. Following the footsteps of the father of the nation who worked tirelessly for the upliftment of the rural community, the basic idea behind this initiative too, was to identify the needs and problems of the community and to work in tandem in resolving them. By instilling in the youth the values of social and civic responsibility, democratic attitude and fine tuning leadership qualities, the NSS scheme serves as an addendum in the nation building process and is much more than just an academic extension scheme.
The National Service Scheme of St. Xavier’s College for Women, Aluva plays an indelible role in the schema of the institution as well as the community. Always at the forefront of offering their voluntary service to the needy, the NSS unit of our college has a glorious history from its inception. With unique initiatives under its belt like “Clean Kerala Drive” Green Campus, Clean Campus and the social park ‘Thanaloram’, our NSS unit has won accolades for its efforts.
